Allan Byrne, a New Zealand surfing legend, has suffered a motorcycle accident in Indonesia and fights for life in a Bali hospital.

Byrne, 62, slipped into a coma and is now on life-support. He was expected to competed in the Masters division, at the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang, when an accident fractured his skull.
The Kiwi surf icon has conquered four National Open championships and also won the Junior title four times. Allan Byrne participated in the World Surfing Championships in 1966, 1968 and 1970.
The surfer from Gisborne finished runner-up at the Pipeline Masters, in 1981. Byrne has been living in the Gold Coast since 1977 and shaping signature surfboards.

The "guru of the channel bottom" has introduced a revolution in surfboard design, after learning aerodynamic techniques in the New Zealand Air Force.
