Super wave found, but you can't surf it
For the first time, waves that crash through a choke point called the Samoan Passage have been measured by University of Washington scientists.
As dense Antarctic bottom water, a key driver of global ocean circulation, forces its way north, it funnels into this passage deep below the Pacific's surface, oceanographer Matthew Alford said.
''Basically the entire South Pacific flow is blocked by this huge submarine ridge,'' Professor Alford said.

''The amount of water that's trying to get northward through this gap is just tremendous - 6 million cubic metres of water per second, or about 35 Amazon rivers.''Just like a wave on a beach or a point, water rises and collapses. As it rushes through, the ridge forms a lee, the water becomes unstable and turbulent, and breaks.
Professor Alford's team found the phenomenon when they lowered instruments five kilometres under the surface at the passage, just north of the Samoan islands - about 4500 kilometres north-east of Brisbane - in an expedition last year.
He said in a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters this week that the passage's breaking waves mixed water at a rate of up to 10,000 times greater than surrounding slow-moving water.
''Oceanographers used to talk about the so-called 'dark mixing' problem, where they knew that there should be a certain amount of turbulence in the deep ocean, and yet every time they made a measurement they observed a tenth of that,'' Professor Alford said.
''We found there's loads and loads of turbulence in the Samoan Passage, and detailed measurements show it's due to breaking waves.''
Professor Alford's Wavechasers group has sailed the world to measure undersea waves, which he said travelled across oceans, and were powerful enough to force submarines to hit the bottom, or breach the surface. As mixers of seawater around the planet, they also had a strong influence on climate, he said.

Ghost ship wrecks Bali surfing contest
Party pooper … the Indonesian champion surfer Rizal Tanjung surveys the abandoned Taiwanese vessel Ho Tsai Fa No. 18 off Padang Padang beach.

Mystery surrounds the arrival of the Taiwanese vessel Ho Tsai Fa No. 18 off Padang Padang beach. Locals woke on Saturday to see the 30-metre-long vessel foundering on a reef, and reaped a barbecue bonanza by emptying its holds of tuna and shark.
Police are still trying to find the boat's Indonesian crew and its Taiwanese captain, Tsai Wen-chen. Taiwanese authorities had requested Indonesia's assistance to locate the boat several weeks ago after it failed to return from a fishing trip off Papua.
Three weeks ago it was spotted by another Taiwanese vessel but sped away when approached, prompting concern it had been taken over by a mutinous crew.
Fishery officials said the Ho Tsai Fa's monitoring system had been turned off since May 13, and it had refused to answer radio messages. Several Balinese said the ship's dozen Indonesian crewmen had thrown their captain overboard and tried to return home, but had lost control of the vessel approaching Bali and fled after it foundered.
In May, Greenpeace intercepted the ship illegally fishing with long lines in the Pacific.
Central Java's coast guard chief, Sutrisna, said a search was under way for the crew members. He would not comment on allegations the captain had been murdered. "We have just found the ship - we cannot say or conclude anything till we investigate further," Commissioner Sutrisna said.
Bali's coast guard chief, Oka Eswara, said attempts to refloat the vessel had been foiled by the weather and tides. "We have notified the Taiwanese embassy to assist, but we simply have to wait until the weather permits," he said.
The accident threatens to disrupt the return of the World Surfing Championship to Bali after an 11-year absence. The event is scheduled to take place next month, but organisers have not announced it for security reasons.

The best bodyboarding spots in the USA
Bodyboarding was born in the United States of America. From California to Hawaii, the country of Tom Morey and Mike Stewart offers a collection of pristine bodyboarding spots.
USA has 14 Atlantic Ocean states, five Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico states, eight Great Lake states, and one Arctic Ocean state. This means, there are waves everywhere for all styles and tastes.
T-Street is one of the most popular bodyboarding spots in California. Located in the San Clemente area, T-Street is very consistent throughout the year, and you can drop in epic wave rides in mid-to-high tides. Main Peak, Cropley', and Beach House are the main spots. During summer, it's spongers' paradise due to blackball.
Newport Wedge is a must. A passionate bodyboarder should ride this Californian spot, at least once in his life. The Wedge is dangerous, steep, heavy and brutal on its best days. Pure refraction and backwash for adrenaline addicts.
Salt Creek and its three options - The Point, Middles and Gravels - are usually very crowded, but you can't get anything better between Huntington Beach and Oceanside. With the right south/northwest swell you can easily get barreled at Gravels.
Lido Beach, on the East Coast, is the best bodyboarding spot in New York's Long Island. Fast rides, hollow barrels and edgy corners that will get you airborne.
Jenks, is one the best wedges available on the Jersey Shore. Home to US bodyboarding contests, Jenks will certainly improve your skills and maneuvers with its fast and demanding wave faces.
The Seven Mile Miracle is Hawaii's most famous gem box. A short bike ride between Haleiwa and Velzyland will present you with the most complete set of volcano island wave riding jewelry pieces.
Pipeline, on the North Shore of Oahu, is probably the best bodyboarding spot in the entire planet. Perfect, fast and heavy, Pipe is the ultimate test for a committed bodyboarder. With southeast winds and west/northwest/north swells, it's a stunning force of nature.
Off-the-Wall and Backdoor are separated by a channel, but will deliver different boogie experiences. The first spot is a challenging close-out for experts and the second one can be a heavier alternative to Pipe dreams.
The Waimea Shorey can be a suicidal experience. Bodyboarders gave it a go before anyone else, but it is still a dangerous place for human beings. Log Cabins, with its razor sharp reef, offers a shifty peak with close-out properties.
Sandy Beach is considered the daily training ground for local and international bodyboarders. The left and right-handers of Gas Chambers, Middles, Cobbles and Pipe Littles are dominated by spongers.
Maui is the windiest island of Hawaii, and also the kingdom of right-handers. Honolua Bay is a power bodyboarding spot for tube riding lovers and skilled aerialists, while Kahului Harbor boosts can be perfect spongers' heaven when it's fired up. Churches is a must for ramp fanatics.

The best animated surfing GIFs ever
Animated surfing GIFs are small treasures with stories behind. A perfect barrel, for example, has its highest moment when the surfer is deep in it.
You can also tell how good a surfer is when, in less than two seconds, a surfboard rail is radically carved on the wave face.
A wave in motion is something our eyes can't miss. You imagine yourself riding it. Endlessly.
Freeze the moment. Freeze the frames of surfing and watch it as many times as you wish, until you're totally surfed out.
What's your favorite animated surfing GIF? Wait a few seconds to watch all fully loaded sequences:
