The new University of Surfing will open in La Jolla, California, in September 2014.

It's one of the most kept secrets in the history of American higher education. The future University of Surfing will be presented as the most complete and comprehensive studies in the sport of wave riding.

There are nearly 2.5 million surfers in the USA. The North American nation has well established roots in surfing, and California is one of the surf riding capitals of the world. The equation puts San Diego in the map of academic surfing degrees.

"It is our great honor to announce that the University of Surfing will open in La Jolla, near San Diego. The academic facilities will be built near the Scripps Institution of Oceanography", explains Fernando Aguerre, president of the International Surfing Association, and the appointed dean for the University of Surfing.

"The new institution will offer three degrees - Advanced Surf Forecasting, History of Surfing, Competitive Surfing, and Surf Industry Management. Our goal is to transform surfing from an exciting water activity into one of the ten most popular outdoor activities in the world".

All four degrees will have a core of common studies. In the Junior and Senior (third and fourth) years, university students will attend specialized classes that will determine their future careers.

The University of Surfing will be fully funded by the "Big Four" surf industry companies: Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Billabong and O'Neill. SurferToday will be contributing with copies of its surf movie collection.

Several stars have been invited to teach at the new academic surf institution. SurferToday has confirmed that all invitations were accepted.

Kelly Slater, Mark Richards, Shaun Tomson, Shane Dorian, Garrett McNamara, Laird Hamilton, Stephanie Gilmore, Jim Moriarty, Bethany Hamilton, Matt Warshaw, Mike Stewart and Maya Gabeira have confirmed they'll be sharing knowledge at the University of Surfing.

"More than just a sport, surfing has long been a cultural melting pot. Those in the surf industry must learn, study and develop more than we actually do. The future generations must be prepared to guide surfing through bright paths", underlines Kelly Slater, who will be teaching "Managing Stress in High Performance Environments".

All candidates wishing to apply to the University of Surfing should follow the traditional admission process of American higher education. Letters of recommendation and outstanding high school grades will improve chances of admission.


"It's all in the brain. The University of Surfing is an excellent, groundbreaking initiative. I can confirm I will be teaching 'Hydrofoils in Hydrodynamics' in the inaugural year", concludes Laird Hamilton.
