The Boardroom honours Ben Aipa

Ben Aipa, the legendary surfboard shaper, will be honoured by The Boardroom, between 17th-18th May, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in California.

The surfer, coach and iconic shaper Ben Aipa is celebrating his 50th anniversary as a craftsman. His work will be highlighted in the well-known surf trade show.

"My staff and I are both humbled and thrilled to honor Mr. Aipa, a classic Hawaiian in every sense of the word. His breakthrough surfboard design, his powerful Hawaiian surfing style and the classic Aipa surfboard logo represent an era of cutting edge performances - in the water and in the shaping bay," says Scott Bass, producer of The Boardroom.

"His design concepts are, to this day, utilized by surfboard craftsman all over the globe and his legacy is perpetuated by both shapers and surfers."

Ben Aipa was born in 1942, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was one of the best surfers of 1960s and early 1970s. Aipa invented the double-ended swallowtail, and the split-rail stinger.

After retiring from the professional surfing scene, the Hawaiian coached Sunny Garcia, Brad Gerlach, Kalani Robb, Bethany Hamilton, Andy and Bruce Irons. In 1991, Ben Aipa was inducted into the International Surfing Hall of Fame.
