Australia is the sixth largest country by total area. Also known as the "island continent", Australia enjoys a very special geography and climate.

Dry, arid and oceanic, Australia's climate is influenced by ocean currents and a tropical low pressure system that produces cyclones.

There are four main climate regions in Australia. The North has a tropical summer rainfall climate. Below, the desert occupies three quarters of Australia. The Southwest of the country enjoys a Mediterranean climate and much of the Southeast is quite temperate.

Surfing is very popular in Australia. You can often hear that everyone surfs in the land of kangaroos. People started to surf here, in the beginning of the 1900's.

Interestingly, the surfing conditions are also changing from state to state. Australia has thousands of great surfing beaches, from beach breaks to point breaks, from big to small waves.

Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia and Northern Territory are the most important Australian surf destinations. Everyone will argue about the best surfing state, but Queensland and New South Wales offer quality, consistency and quantity.

Tasmania, for instance, sometimes delivers big wave surfing sessions due to occasional low pressures systems in the region. Here, Shipsterns Bluff is considered to be one of the most dangerous waves in the world.

The best surf spots in Queensland are located in the South. Surfers Paradise, Coolangatta, Noosa, Kirra,Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Heads, The Spit, Dolphin Heads and Duranbah are spectacular surf spots.

In Western Australia it's easy to find uncrowded surf. Avalon, Back Beach, Cables, Leighton, The Cove,Wedge Island are nice surf spots.

In Southern Australia, if sharks and cold water aren't a problem, try to surf in Dolphin Beach, Venus Bay Beach and Knights Beach.

The small and most densely populated state of Victory has plenty of perfect surf breaks and some of the best surf beaches in Australia. Bells Beach leads the way, but you should try Warnambool Surf Beach,Elliot River, Marengo, Torquay.

Surfing in New South Wales is easy. There are hundreds of top quality surf spots and many national surfing reserves along the coast of NSW. In the North coast, look for Leannox Head, Coffs Harbour,Crescent Head, Port Macquarie, Old Bar, Duranbah Beach and Newcastle. In the South, discoverWollongong, Broulee Beach, Mollymook, "The Farm" and "Mystics" near Shellharbour.
